Refining foliage sampling protocols for white clover
نویسندگان
چکیده
White clover (Trifolium repens) foliar ‘grab’ samples were taken pre-grazing from two irrigated experiments at Lincoln University ~6 week intervals August 2019 to May 2021. Clover leaves divided into lamina and petiole before analysis. The results for nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) sulphur (S) concentrations are reported.
While there seasonal variations, N% S% consistently higher in the white than petiole, K% was mostly P% during winter/early spring period. With increasing sward height, DW ratio declined 4, a height of 5 cm, 1 20 cm. lamina+petiole sample had lower N S alone. Over time, relatively stable but P, K showed ~ two-fold variation may have been affected by low soil moisture.
diagnosis nutrient status should be based on lamina-only spring, when plant growth is fastest, just prior grazing sufficient herbage. foliage sampling routinely used inform fertiliser recommendations rather relying development visual symptoms deficiency.

متن کاملSampling Strategies for Efficient Estimation of Tree Foliage Biomass
Conifer crowns can be highly variable both within and between trees, particularly with respect to foliage biomass and leaf area. A variety of sampling schemes have been used to estimate biomass and leaf area at the individual tree and stand scales. Rarely has the effectiveness of these sampling schemes been compared across stands or even across species. In addition, sample size estimates for ac...
متن کاملThe intensifying requirements for white clover cultivar change
For the last five years an average 14,761 ha of white clover has been grown for seed, with 77%, 8% and 15% sown in public cultivars, New Zealand and overseas proprietary cultivars, respectively. The area presently contaminated by proprietaries is estimated at 20,000 ha. New Zealand requirements for cultivar-change are more effective than OECD requirements. The five-year break period enables suc...

متن کاملTowards an optimal sampling strategy for assessing genetic variation within and among white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars using AFLP
Cost reduction in plant breeding and conservation programs depends largely on correctly defining the minimal sample size required for the trustworthy assessment of intra- and inter-cultivar genetic variation. White clover, an important pasture legume, was chosen for studying this aspect. In clonal plants, such as the aforementioned, an appropriate sampling scheme eliminates the redundant analys...
